Since 2014, several studies show that hydrocarbon derivatives are found in consumer food products: pasta, rice, cereals, ...
This contamination by mineral oils of packaged products has several origins: the recycled cardboard but also the external environment and the residues of lubricating products of the machines during the manufacturing process.
Two categories of oils are involved:
• MOAH (mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons)
• MOSH (mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons)
MOAH are suspected of being carcinogenic and mutagenic.
Currently no regulation exists on the acceptable amounts of these mineral oils in food products.
However, EFSA (European Health Agency) considers that exposure to these substances via food is a potential concern.
ANSES (National Agency for Sanitary Safety of Food) recommends limiting its use in the food industry.
The EU commission recommendation 2017/84 requires member states to monitor the presence of MOSH and MOAH in food in 2017 and 2018.
